Job Description:

Job Summary

Provide leadership and oversight in directing other members of the STS Analytics team. Perform statistical programming, analysis, and data management on datasets derived from the component registries of the STS National Database. Lead projects of the STS Analytics team, including STS National Database analytics, quality improvement and research projects, predictive risk-adjusted model applications, and data management of research databases. Develop new statistical methodologies to be used in STS National Database and Research analyses. Oversee development and management of clinical sub-specialty research datasets including the incorporation of linkages to other data sources. Provide expertise in statistical programming and analytics, advanced database querying, and quality assurance of pre-analysis datasets and post-analysis results reports.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

STS National Database and Research Analytics:

  • Work closely with other members of the STS Analytics team on the timely execution of all aspects of STS National Database harvest analytics and multiple related deliverables (i.e., database participant-level risk adjusted reports, public reporting data, and umbrella reports) for the Adult Cardiac Surgery, General Thoracic Surgery, and Congenital Heart Surgery component databases of the STS National Database.
  • Review analyses completed by other STS Analytics team members. Ensure that requirements of STS National Database analytics, as well as analytics of individual STS investigators’ and other parties’ (e.g., Industry) projects are conducted accurately and delivered in a timely manner.
  • Develop statistical analysis plans (SAPs) including conferring with investigators to finalize SAPs. Recommend best practices and methodological approaches.
  • Develop methodologies for new risk models to enhance existing risk models currently in use.
  • Conduct analyses and prepare reports with tabulations and graphical representations using a variety of techniques, ranging from simple data aggregation to more complex methods.
  • Present results in written and verbal form to requestors.
  • Perform complex programming such as data transposition and macros. Combine and link multiple data sources to STS datasets and derive analysis variables accurately.
  • Oversee and establish timelines for statistical project management. Supervise relevant STS Analytics staff to ensure timely completion of projects and deliverables.

Data Management:

  • Utilize the multiple clinical specialty research databases to derive analytical datasets for STS Research Center activities and programs.
  • Develop standardized database querying and analysis reporting templates to increase efficiency and accuracy of work product.
  • Lead data linkage efforts for datasets derived from the component registries of the STS National Database to external data sources such as CMS in-patient and out-patient files, National Death Index data, Census and American Community Survey data.
  • Oversee creation of analysis data sets in support of STS National Database reports and Research projects.
  • Identify and define data management needs for the STS Analytics team and supervise staff conducting these activities.
  • Participate along with other members of the STS Analytics team throughout the specification upgrades of each of the STS National Database component registries. Ensure that the needed analytics changes (e.g., modification of code, input dataset preparation and recoding, and content of output reports) are appropriately tested and implemented.
  • Develop and maintain accurate documentation.

Data Quality and Validation:

  • Develop and implement data quality checks to confirm accuracy and completeness of STS National Database and research analytic datasets (pre-analysis).
  • Generate quality checks on reports to confirm accuracy and completeness of aggregated results, including cohort comparisons (post-analysis).
  • Oversee and ensure that data quality activities are defined, implemented, and aligned across all component databases of the STS National Database.


  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of the component registries of the STS National Database, data fields, and data specifications across multiple database versions.
  • Develop statistical approaches to accommodate novel research requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience and Skills:


Doctoral degree in statistics, data science, epidemiology, or other related field (e.g., computer science, engineering, or mathematics) is required.


A minimum of 4 years post-doctoral degree of related work experience in data management, data analysis, statistical programming, and report writing is required. Familiarity with healthcare, clinical databases/registries, or medical association environment is preferred.

Essential Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent knowledge of, and experience in, statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, SPSS, Stata)
  • Proficiency in SQL database skills
  • Significant experience with large data sets using SAS or other data management platforms (transformation and merging) and statistical methods such as classification tables, descriptive summaries, linear and logistic multiple regression, mixed hierarchical models, survival and other time-to-event analysis methods
  • Able to work on any phase of a research manuscript project, from initial meeting with an investigator to final review of a manuscript prior to submission for publication
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
    • Experience with graphical representation of data is required
    • Ability to participate in evening conference calls, as necessary
  • Experience in supervising analytics staff
